Biography

Dalgleish studied at East Sydney Technical College (approximately 1932 to 1934).

In 1933, he illustrated some short stories in the Sydney Sun. His first work in the The Australian Women's Weekly was published 1934. He spent time with three companions on Gould Island off north Queensland, living simply and painting.

Dalgleish entered a painting of Margaret van Gapp in the 1935 Archibald Prize.

In the late thirties, he regularly illustrated stories for The Sun and The World's News before five years in the army during the Second World War, serving in New Guinea and Borneo.

After the war, Dalgleish did some illustrations for various newspapers before moving to The Australian Women's Weekly, where he was staff artist from 1949 to 1956, providing lush full colour paintings to illustrate stories. From late 1952 to 1953, he took a break to travel abroad in Canada, US, England and Europe.

Notes

Dalgleish married fellow artist Margaret Myfanwy ‘Vanoo’ van Gapp in 1935. They separated in 1937 and divorced in early 1940. He married again in September 1940 to Irene Marion (René) Lear [or Ferry] ('Australia's leading woman fashion artist'), a regular illustrator for The Telegraph in the mid-thirties and then with the The Australian Women's Weekly from 1936. After serving in the Second World War for five years, he separated from her in 1946 and divorced in 1947.

Keith's parents names are reported in birth data as Andrew and Annie. A 'Morris Dalgleish' with parents of these names is reported to have died in Rockdale in 1960. Morris Dalgleish, a 'bank officer', is listed as son and beneficiary of the estate of widow Annie Dalgleish who died on or about 22 July 1942 (see trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/222034649).
